Library of Alexandria
If I could visit a library from the past I would like to go the Library of Alexandria.
It was considered to be one of the world's first study centres and was an important place of learning in the Ancient World.
Ptolemy 1 and many of his successors supported scholars and the notion of learning for the sake of learning.
Manuscripts were not just stored they were used for reference and research for new scholars and priceless books were copied by local scribes and traded for other books from the Ancient World.
What a wonderful place to visit!

Competency 3 - adding links to social media sites.
For Competency 2 I decided to look at my local Hobson's Bay library network to see how they use social media platforms to communicate with the public. Hobson's Bay is are made up of Williamstown, Newport, Altona, Altona Nth and Altona Meadows Libraries.
The Hobson's Bay libraries mainly rely on Facebook and Twitter. Facebook has lots of events and photos posted on it to celebrate events and to talk in detail about guests they have had in and to advertise upcoming events. Their Twitter site is also used to give quick updates and reminders of events, more up to the minute details but brief. Some of the information such as the photos from their recent team running in the City 2 Sea fun run was duplicated. There is also the ability to "like" most of the pages on their website. They use YouTube to upload videos, discuss sites or clips. They have a few subscribers to their YouTube site which has some library clips along with general, popular sites.

Overall these libraries use their Facebook and Twitter sites to inform the public about what is going on and to share photos and information about stories and community events. Facebook has more detail where as Twitter provides short, up to date information which is probably used more by the younger generation. Some of the information is on both sites so it depends on your preference and how much time you have to keep up to date but it reaches across different age-groups and types of users.

Friday was VU day.
As an off campus student I don't go into VU very often but I did on Friday and spent a few hours with Margie learning lots of helpful hints for working with Social Media. It was nice to put a face to a profile and I appreciated your time Margie. Thanks
Williamstown Library Updated
It was good to go and see the new Williamstown Library. I visited it for a subject this Semester and found the library to be user friendly, fresh, organised and the library staff could not have been more helpful and were all willing to take the time to talk to me and show me around. I am grateful for their assistance and friendly manner.

The positive and negative aspects of organisations posting information across multiple social media platforms
First the positives....
- The use of multiple social media platforms allows companies to combine their personal, professional and commercial interests and to reach large numbers of people with this information.
- The interaction from the public is instant and direct.
- Opinions can be voiced quickly and can attract other members of the public to connect with the organisation and accessibility is increased.
- Conversations with customers/users can be initiated all over the world.
- Some feedback can lead to improvements in the way the organisation operates.
- People feel more connected if they can make a direct contribution though communication.
- It allows organisations to monitor public opinion of a product or service.
- People identify with a product that they can see, read, comment about.
- Online customer loyalty can grow.
Now for the negatives.....
- There is duplication of information which can cause saturation and people turn off.
- Being able to voice opinions about an organisation or its products can be harmful if people take a dislike to it and they discuss it widely.
- Employees can harm a companies image by posting indiscreet photos or videos which can be put instantly on sites such as Facebook and YouTube.
- Legislating in this field is difficult as it is a new area of law which keeps evolving.
- Discrimination based on social media research can cause companies to be investigated and may involve litigation.
- Technical safeguards need to be in place and very secure to prevent corruption such as viruses and spyware.
- Employees posting information without permission can cause legal problems ie contract breaches.
- Employees need to be careful about defamation when writing about competitors.
- Companies need to be aware of employees sharing information through social media in terms of privacy and should have strict guidelines in place and ensure they are adhered to.

As part of another subject I visited 2 libraries in Hobson's Bay recently. Williamstown Library in particular looks great after its renovations and I had not been there for over 5 years so it was quite different. Altona Nth Library was good too on a smaller scale and both had cafes run by Yooralla with training provided on site.
