For Competency 2 I decided to look at my local Hobson's Bay library network to see how they use social media platforms to communicate with the public. Hobson's Bay is are made up of Williamstown, Newport, Altona, Altona Nth and Altona Meadows Libraries.

Hobsons Bay Libraries - Altona, VIC

The Hobson's Bay libraries mainly rely on Facebook and Twitter. Facebook has lots of events and photos posted on it to celebrate events and to talk in detail about guests they have had in and to advertise upcoming events. Their Twitter site is also used to give quick updates and reminders of events, more up to the minute details but brief. Some of the information such as the photos from their recent team running in the City 2 Sea fun run was duplicated. There is also the ability to "like" most of the pages on their website. They use YouTube to upload videos, discuss sites or clips. They have a few subscribers to their YouTube site which has some library clips along with general, popular sites.

Overall these libraries use their Facebook and Twitter sites to inform the public about what is going on and to share photos and information about stories and community events. Facebook has more detail where as Twitter provides short, up to date information which is probably used more by the younger generation. Some of the information is on both sites so it depends on your preference and how much time you have to keep up to date but it reaches across different age-groups and types of users.
